Dr John McCoombes

Dr John McCoombes is passionate about delivering individualised care suited to each and every patient’s unique circumstances. He is guided by the best available evidence in the specialised Ophthalmic literature and also by his extensive clinical experience, but he believes that it is only by listening carefully to each patient’s circumstances that the best clinical judgement can be made. He has been in Private Practice on the Gold Coast for almost twenty years and is a founding Partner of Outlook Eye Specialists.

He has been extensively trained in all aspects of Ophthalmology and his special interests lie in diseases and surgery of the retina and cataract surgery. He was one of the first to embrace the use of intravitreal treatments for age-related macular degeneration on the Gold Coast in 2006 and now has many years of experience. In order to keep fully up to date with the most recent developments in his profession, he is a member of numerous organisations, including the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Surgeons, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the European Society of Retinal Specialists.

He did a Bachelor of Medical Science and his undergraduate medical training at University of Queensland and his postgraduate general ophthalmology training in Brisbane. This was followed by two years of Fellowship Training in the United Kingdom, the first at the West of England Eye Unit in Exeter and the second year as Vitreoretinal Fellow at the Gloucestershire Eye Department. He was part-time Staff Specialist at the Mater Public Hospital in Brisbane from 2002 – 2015 and Senior Lecturer at University of Queensland until 2016.

Teaching of Medical Students, Eye Registrars, Optometry Students and Optometrists has always been a very important part of his professional activities. Lifelong learning is also extremely important and he is currently the Queensland Representative on the Continuing Professional Development Committee for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. He also sits on the State RANZCO Committee.

Eye Surgery is an extremely precise and delicate surgical specialty that Dr McCoombes delights in performing, but he believes that it is only through a good Doctor/Patient relationship that the correct clinical decisions can be made with the patient.
