Dr John McCoombes
BmedSc, MBBS(QLD), FRANZCO
Dr John McCoombes is passionate about delivering individualised care which is suited to each and every patient’s unique circumstances. He is guided by the best available evidence in the specialised Ophthalmic literature and also by his extensive clinical experience, but he believes that it is only by listening carefully to each patient’s circumstances that the best clinical judgement can be made.
This practice philosophy was what inspired him to set up Outlook Eye Specialists on the Gold Coast with his colleagues, Dr Godfrey and Dr Ng.
He has been extensively trained in all aspects of Ophthalmology and his special interests lie in diseases and surgery of the retina and cataract surgery. He was one of the first to embrace the use of intravitreal treatments for age-related macular degeneration on the Gold Coast and now has years of experience in treating this condition. He is also a member of the team of Ophthalmologists who diagnose and treat retinopathy or prematurity in premature infants throughout Queensland.
He is very dedicated to training the next generation of Eye Surgeons, by being a Clinical Tutor to the Eye Registrars at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane. He regularly tutors and lectures medical students and Optometrists to pass on his knowledge in order to help with the professional development of his colleagues.
In order to keep fully up to date with the most recent developments in his profession, he is a member of numerous organisations, including the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Surgeons, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the Australian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He was also the past Queensland Representative on the continuing professional development committee of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
Eye Surgery is an extremely precise and delicate surgical specialty that Dr McCoombes delights in performing, but he believes that it is only through a good Doctor/Patient relationship that the correct clinical decisions can be made with the patient.
